Nusa Lembongan is a small island located in the southeast of the island of Bali and adjacent to Nusa ceningan where connecting these 2 islands is bridged by a bridge known as the "Yellow Bridge" (yellow bridge).
Lembongan is located at the coordinates 8 ° 40. 906′S 115° 27. 067′E part of a group of three islands within the district of Nusa Penida and is part of the Nusa Tenggara Islands.
Lembongan Island which has a length of 4,6 km and a width of 1-1,5 km is located approximately 11 km to the northwest of Nusa Penida - Bali 3 Nusa. Administratively, this island belongs to the Klungkung Regency, Bali Province, Indonesia.
Geography of Lembongan
Nusa Lembongan and the island of Bali are separated by 12 km by the Bali Strait. With a local population of around 5000 people, they inhabit this 8 square kilometer area.
Nusa Lembongan is surrounded by coral reefs and white sandy beaches and towering limestone cliffs and corals. Nusa Lembongan is separated from Nusa Ceningan by a shallow estuary canal which is difficult for boats to pass at low tide.
Suspension bridge yellowbridge is the only one that connects Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan which is a traffic lane for pedestrians and motorbikes only.
Nusa Lembongan is divided into two large villages namely “Lembongan Village and Jungutbatu Village”. Lembongan Village oversees 6 hamlets and 12 traditional banjars, whose territory is located on two islands, namely most of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.
The six hamlets that support Lembongan Village are; Kawan, Kaja, Kelod, Kangin, Ceningan Kawan and Ceningan Kangin hamlets (the last two hamlets are located in Nusa Ceningan).
There are three main villages in Lembongan. Temporary Jungut Rock and Mushroom Bay is a center for tourism-based industry and tourism activities. While many local residents live in Lembongan Village which is in the middle of the island.
Transportation in Lembongan
Transportation on the island is not very adequate. Starting from very few cars and vans and no large vehicles such as buses or others. In addition to the small width of the road and the 30% dirt and rock conditions in Nusa Lembongan, the main source of transportation is by motorbike/scooter and trail, therefore many automatic motorbike units are rented out and motorbike rental services are here.
There are several means of transportation that you can meet in Nusa Lembongan, starting from; The Sarafi car, this means of transportation, is very popular among tourists on this island like an open cab.
There is also a buggy car but this type is very expensive to hire or rent. The cost of renting a buggy car can reach Rp. 800.000 – 1 million per day, many hotel/villa accommodations also prepare this type of buggy for their operations.
Transportation from and to Nusa Lembongan with the island of Bali is taken by sea, namely; from and to east Bali via the Tri Buwana Port – Bias Munjul Ceningan kanngin, from and to West Bali via the Sanur Denpasar Harbor – Tanjung Sanghyang Port Lembongan route.
The journey time from Sanur Harbor to Tanjung Sanghyang Lembongan is about 1 – 1,5 hours using a jukung (jangolan) and about 30 minutes and if you use a speed boat such as Dcamel or Tanis.
The main livelihood of the lembongan community is as a farmer seaweed some work in the tourism sector and the tourism support sector. But since tourism is growing rapidly in Lembongan, seaweed production has decreased drastically. Many seaweed farmers have switched professions to become fishermen supporting tourism, such as: mangrove tours which takes tourists through the mangrove forest.
The main factor is the decrease in seaweed production due to the contamination of seaweed by fuel droplets and oil from ships/fast boats that come and go or tourist activities.
Marine conservation is considered very important to sustain future levels of tourism on Lembongan Island and in February 2009. A local NGO from Nusa Lembongan and facilitated by The Nature Conservancy Coral Triangle Center opened a community empowerment center here.
The waters around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida have at least 247 species of coral and 562 species of reef fish. So many other conservation initiatives are in motion including the Ridley Olive Tortoise conservation program at Sunset beach on the southwest coast of Lembongan.
