This ship is a traditional wooden sailing ship typical of the Bugis Tribe in Indonesia South Sulawesi. Precisely the one in Ara Village, in Bulukumba Regency.

Since it was first made, namely by Sawerigading, a Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Luwu, the process of making the Phinisi Bulukumba Ship has been full of unique rituals. This tradition has been preserved to this day.

The initial purpose of making it was to be used to sail to China, when the crown prince would propose to a Chinese princess whose name was We Cudai.

Now the Phinisi wooden ship is very useful to support tourism in Indonesia. For example as a floating hotel like many in foreign countries. Meanwhile, local residents use it to transport goods.

Rituals in Phinisi Shipbuilding

Ritual philosophy in shipbuilding phinisi It's like the process of making a child. The process begins with the union of two large pieces of wood as the keel or the main body of the ship, which symbolizes the union of husband and wife. Then only developed in the manufacture of ship hulls and other ship parts. So no blueprints.

The prayer procession takes place at every stage including from the beginning with the Barzanji ceremony and kenduri before starting the shipbuilding process. Then before the process of making the hull, the community will perform a prayer ceremony and feast again and the traditional elders will lead the procession.

Then when it is launched into the sea, it is like the process of giving birth to a baby. At the ceremony of launching the Pinisi ship to the sea, a Panrita Lopi will lead and pray that everything goes smoothly and the ship can be useful and always safely sail the ocean.

Previously, once the ship was finished, the community would perform the Appasili ceremony, which is a ceremony to reject reinforcements. Then the next day the community will perform the Barzanji ceremony again. Then at the peak of the traditional ceremony, the Ammossi traditional procession. will end the whole series of events

In this procession, the traditional leader will make a navel in the middle of the keel or at the very bottom of the ship, as a sign that on that day the shipbuilding process has been completed and a new Phinisi ship has been born which is ready to be deployed to the middle of the ocean.

Then the process of releasing the ship into the ocean which is also traditional, full of unique rituals will involve many people. Even up to about hundreds of people who will drag the Phinisi ship that has been completed earlier to reach the sea manually using a mine.

With the involvement of many people and various unique rituals, it is not surprising that the cost of making this traditional ship also requires a lot of money.

Manufacturing Cost Range

As an illustration, the cost to build a Phinisi ship with a carrying capacity specification of 12 people of which 5 people are crew members, and an engine capacity of 600 horsepower and a gross tonnage of 260 GT will cost up to 12 billion Rupiah. While the period of manufacture reaches about one year. Wow, that's really amazing.
